In the state of Pennsylvania, Personal Care Homes are licensed by the Department of Public Welfare as residential facilities that serve the needs of people requiring assistance with ADL’s and IADL’s, but do NOT directly provide medical or skilled nursing care.
What are Activities of Daily Living (ADL's)?
- Eating and Drinking
- Walking and getting into/out of beds, chairs, wheelchairs, and vehicles
- Turning and positioning in bed or chair
- Toileting and incontinence needs
- Personal hygeine needs
- Securing and managing health care
- Medication administration (such as pills, lotions, drops, patches, inhalers, & insulin)
What are independent Activities of Daily Living (iADL's)?
- Weekly laundry
- Routine weekly housekeeping
- Arranging transportation
- Using canes, walkers, wheelchairs, or other assistive devices
- Scheduling and remembering appointments
- Caring for clothing and personal possessions
- Arranging home health services, such as therapy or visiting nurses

- Includes 2 daily meals and stocked cupboards for breakfast items

Personal Care
- Accommodations range from large efficiency suites to semiprivate rooms
- 3 daily meals plus snacks
- all-inclusive rates cover ADL and iADL assistance, including medication administration

- 24 hour staff supervision with emergency availability via call system
- Coordination with appropriate community agencies, such as PT, OT,
- Speech, visiting nurses, or hospice care (billed separately)
Memory Care
- Semi-private or private rooms
- Smaller, enclosed area with its own dining room and lounge
- Private access to enclosed courtyard designed for residents with Alzheimer’s or dementia
- Higher staff ratio to provide increased supervision of residents
- Wander-guard alarms on doors
- All services offered under Personal Care
Respite Care
- A way for caretakers to get away while being reassured that their loved one is in a safe, supervised, and caring environment
- A great option for someone who was hospitalized, but needs a few more days to recuperate and gain strength before going back home
- Respite stays can start for a minimum of 5 days
- A good way to “try us out” before moving in
- Room & location choices depend on availability
- All services under Personal Care are included for respite residents
